Grammarly used an intelligent grammar modification system. It can be used as an extension program, it can check the grammar of all your writings that you do on your computer. And it has a higher accuracy when it’s correcting your grammar than Word’s own correction system. It also gives suggestions of word replacements when you’re overusing certain words. However, the words replacements suggestion is not always accurate. Grammarly may give you a synonym which is not appropriate to use in the context of your writing. It also has the features that it suggests the writer use less passive voice and shorter sentences. Which can be unnecessary. For its spelling checking feature, I think Grammarly does better than the Microsoft Word in the way that the writer can choose to add the word they spelled wrong to their dictionary for later revisions. Grammarly also has this strength at checking plagiarism. It’s very useful for students who need to write academic papers.
However, just as I have mentioned in the word replacement suggestion part. Grammarly is only using a calculation to correct the paper rather than taking the context into account. Therefore, its correction can’t be 100% correct. Students need to have the ability to accept good suggestions and ignore the wrong ones. Also, its premium version is quite expensive.

I will recommend Grammarly to my students who need to write paper often. Grammar correct the mistakes in a very efficient and convenient way. But I need to tell them that Grammar is not 100% reliable. It can make mistakes and overlook the writer’s mistakes. So, the students still need to read through their paper to look for other mistakes even they already used Grammarly.
